What is Neapolitan Ice cream?

Neapolitan Ice cream is said to have originated from the city of Naples in Italy. Early Neapolitan immigrants brought this dessert to the United States.

In the Early days Neapolitan Ice was an ice cream with different flavors. Same thing today with the only difference being that the flavors have been specifically narrowed down to Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla flavored ice cream.

This three flavored ice cream would be placed in three layers within the ice cream bowl which is usually in this order chocolate, strawberry and vanilla creating a similar pattern as the Italian flag when served.

With that being said, you don’t have to layer your Neapolitan Ice cream of you don’t want to. I usually just make a batch each of my Chocolate ice cream, Vanilla ice cream and strawberry ice cream. For this recipe I go with my plain strawberry ice cream recipe flavored with strawberry gelatin and not the strawberry ice cream with bits of fresh strawberries. I just feel the plain strawberry ice cream without the bits work better with Neapolitan ice cream.

How to make Neapolitan Ice cream.

Method 1: When I have all my ice cream flavors ready I freeze them for up to 6 hrs or overnight. Ice cream flavors needed for this Neapolitan ice cream are listed below:

When it’s ready, I serve a scoop or two of each flavor into an ice cream cup or a cone and enjoy. For this method, you can use store bought ice cream.

If you would rather have every thing in one bowl, there are two ways to go about it. See method 2 and 3 below. Store bought ice cream is not recommended for method 2 and 3 because store bought ice cream is in the frozen state.

Method 2: Layer the ice cream with one flavor per layer in this order, chocolate ice cream, strawberry ice cream and vanilla ice cream.

Method 3: Put the various flavors in a random fashion but do not mix other wise you would have a marbled Ice cream. Still yummy but would take away the distinct colors Neapolitan ice cream is known for.

What do you need to make Neapolitan Ice cream?

This is a no churn, egg free recipe. All you need is heavy whipping cream, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract and some salt. You will need some additional ingredients like cocoa powder and strawberry gelatin powder to make the chocolate and strawberry ice cream flavors respectively.

If you love ice cream you will definitely love these other no churn ice cream flavors. They are always a hit.

Quick Tips to ensure Recipe Success

  • Use cold heavy cream not room temperature. Cold cream whips better.
  • Use cold utensils. Especially if you are using a stainless steel bowl to whip the cream. It helps to pop the bowl and whisk into the freezer for about 15 mins before whipping the cream.
  • Please Don’t skip the salt. It balances the sweetness in the ice cream.
