Savory Mashed Sweet Potato Recipe

Regular mashed potatoes are a perennial favorite, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy mashed sweet potatoes as well! The vastly different flavor makes this a perfect side for weeknights and holidays.

Sweet Potatoes are a favorite in my house because they are just so tasty. We enjoy them in different forms like roasted sweet potatoes, Breakfast sweet potato hash, and many more.

Not the Overly Sweet, no sugar, no maple syrup

These mashed sweet potatoes are really creamy and very tasty. It is not the overly sweet version that is laden with brown sugar or maple. I also added a little sprinkle of pumpkin spice to make it a bit more festive, but honestly, you don’t need to.

The cream cheese is an essential ingredient that should not be skipped. It helps create a rich, thick, creamy consistency for the mash; it also complements the sweetness of the potatoes, making the dish more hearty rather than sweet.

Sweet potato mash pairs so well with grilled ham steak, grilled turkey, grilled chicken, sauteed green beans, and many more.

How to cook sweet potatoes?

There are three ways to cook sweet potatoes before mashing them—boiling, steaming, or baking.

  • Boiling is the simplest and works the same as usual mashed potatoes.
  • Steaming is similar and has the added benefit of preserving the nutrients of the sweet potatoes that leak out into the water when boiling.
  • Baking the sweet potatoes creates a unique texture.

It really boils down to your personal preference as to which way is best!
